Background
South Africa's consumer cooperative retail movement is growing fast. In just two years, a network of independently governed cooperative stores has taken root across Gauteng and beyond — each one member-owned, community-driven, and facing the same fundamental challenge: how do you run a financially complex organisation, distribute dividends fairly across hundreds of members, and make strategic decisions — without the enterprise infrastructure that large retailers take for granted?
That's the problem Sulta Tech was brought in to solve.
The Challenge
Each cooperative we worked with had the same core pain points, at different stages of growth:
- No purpose-built system for managing member databases alongside financial records
- Manual dividend computation — slow, error-prone, and unscalable as membership grew
